            I'm not proud to be an American! This country is the shits! I'm not surprised that we're hated and laughed at by other people in other countries. Perhaps people below a certain I.Q. level should be sterilized. Scary thought, that, but it makes some sense to me. I'd really like to live in some other country - this one is spoiled and rotting away very quickly. Just look at our "President." Need I say more????

              Unfortunately the state of the education system is woeful here in the States.
              Even the basic concepts of what countries, and capital cities are, is an unknown to most students, let alone their parents.
              I have many stories of going into schools and seeing outrageous things - the map of Australia upside down / Europe wrongly labeled as Africa / constant spelling errors by teachers etc., I could write a book about the lack of knowledge of the world, by Americans.
              My first class I taught here in the States, was lacking in any basic knowledge of geography, so I put the set curriculum aside, and for six weeks gave my students an intensive course in world geography and history.
              There needs to be basic skills and knowledge required for graduation. It's a farce.
              Don't get me started.
              Now I teach teachers. It's hell.

                It is very disconcerting that the mere observation of any flaws within a country, cause an immediate knee-jerk reaction such as yours.
                Grow up and get out from under your rock.
                (By the way, it just so happens that the examples I cited were from Indiana... heaven help us!!)

                  I'm Scottish, have lived in Scotland (oddly enough) then London, Surrey and am now in Spain and I used to think poorly of American's and America but knowing the stereo-type is not true of anyone. However my views have rapidly changed since I made the decision to leave Britain because I didn't agree with what was happening there. It wasn't long before I thought the same about Spain and now I'm looking towards America as a place to live instead. What I'm trying to say is we all look to other countries and think they have everything right but in actual fact they all have it wrong it just depends how much wrong you can put up with!

                    Guess the grass really is always greener, right?

                    I feel blessed to have been born in America, but that doesn't mean that I agree with the way our government runs things. I am saddened that we're not doing better in many regards, such as education, health care, care for the poor and the elderly, veterans' affairs, election policies, and the Iraq War.

                    I still love my country and am grateful for the opportunities it has afforded me...I don't really want to live anywhere else. I just think we have many problems to try and sort out, and the sooner, the better!

                    Good luck, Sarah...I hope you find what you're looking for. I would love to spend time visiting most of the places you've mentioned, and hope to do so someday.

    Stupid is as stupid does. It matters not the location.

    An example, I just got through watching a show about Afghanistan and this pregnant woman was brought to the hospital near death. She had been very ill and her family took her to a mullah to exercise the demons, so he beat her and strangled her in the attempt. It could just has easily have been a catholic, albeit in the 14th century.

    Stupid is everywhere, babe. There ain't no lack of it.

      Thank you, I think you are absolutely right and the one thing I absolutely adore about Americans is the patrotic pride you have. Britain is having an identity crisis, we can't even decide what to call ourselves, Britain, UK, Great Britain, England, Scotland etc! Being patrotic and happy doesn't mean you agree with all your administrations decisions but it does mean you are grateful for what you have and are basically happy and that's worth more than anything. (I'll stop before I make myself cry! LOL)

      Skooter, I couldn't agree more! Stupid really is everywhere, I honestly think the world views Americans as stupid simply because America is a large country with the largest media coverage in the world. Everyone is constantly "watching America". If everyone on the plant is stupid, at least some of the time, and most of the planet looks towards America then ergo people will think Americans are stupid.
